What pairs well with “naughty little oysters”?
I absolutely love oysters, my uncle from the Philippines calls them the original Viagra from the sea, whether or not you find this true I do know that they taste great with Vinho Verde!!! Peg Melnik of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat and her tasting panel voted the Muralhas de Moncao their Wine of the Week out of 12 wines from Austria, France, Spain, and California. It was only two weeks ago when I blogged about this wine especially how good it was with oysters and seafood. Wow I feel like a regular Nostradamus here.
Michele Anna Jordan another Press Democrat writer also wrote a great article on pairing Portuguese Vinho Verde with seafood. The only thing she said that I disagreed with was “If you see it on a restaurant menu for $10 a glass or thereabouts, you should skip it. You can find good bottles for well under that price.” I’ll admit most Vinho Verde you find at the supermarket is $6 to $9 a bottle, but there are also many different ...Click here to continue reading What pairs well with “naughty little oysters”?
The LA Times is throwing Portugal more love with another Wine of the Week Pick
Portugal's on fire in La La land with the 2004 Quinta de Cabriz Reserva Red from the Dao region. "The dry red wine from Portugal, bursting with ripe flavors, is a steal at less than $20." says LA Times wine writer S. Irene Virbila and Luis and I couldn't agree more. We've been spreading the gospel steadily for a few years now. Portugal is not the "next big thing" as some wine writers have put it, we believe it's already arrived and many savvy California retailers, wine directors, and sommeliers out here are finally catching on to what folks back east have known for the past few years. Portugal is hot and here to stay! From a value standpoint not many other places in the world can compete from the sheer quality to price ratio. Surely you can find cheaper wines from Chile, Australia, and even here in California but I really doubt the quality in those massed produced brand wines come close to what you’re getting from Portugal!!!

If you like Ponte de Lima you’ll love Muralhas de Monção!
Since our little Ponte de Lima Vinho Verde has been getting so much attention lately I thought it would be appropriate to shed a little more light on the region and mention one of our other Vinho Verde’s the 2007 Muralhas de Monção.
Monção is the northern-most sub-region in Vinho Verde. It runs along the Minho River bordering Spain directly across from Rias Baixas. As you might already know Rias Baixas is world famous for the Albariño grape but what many folks don’t realize is Portugal also grows Alvarinho which is the same exact grape as the Spanish Albariño.
Just like Ponte de Lima, Adega Cooperativa Regional de Monção is a high quality Co-op that was founded in 1958 with 25 original growers. Their Vinho Verde is made up of 70% Alvarinho grapes and 30% Trajadura. Monção is renowned for their Alvarinho and with a much hotter and drier climate than the rest of the Minho, giving their wines much more body and alcohol, sometimes 2 to 3 degrees more alcohol by volume. It is very similar ...Click here to continue reading If you like Ponte de Lima you’ll love Muralhas de Monção!
Ponte de Lima Vinho Verde is LA Times Wine O the Week!
Vinos Unico calls San Francisco home, but our friends down in Los Angeles also thirst for the unique and exciting wines of Spain and Portugal and demand for these products in SoCal grows with each passing day. Last week Monday the Los Angeles Times featured the Ponte de Lima Vinho Verde (a wine that has recently become something of a sensation up and down the coast) as their 'wine of the week'. ...Click here to continue reading Ponte de Lima Vinho Verde is LA Times Wine O the Week!
Our new Portuguese sparkler from Luis Pato in the News
Today the San Francisco Chronicle gave a shout out to our distinctive sparkling wine from Portugal. Lynn Char Bennet reviewed the Luis Pato Espumante Bruto for the "In Our Glasses" column of the weekly wine section. She praised the wine for its "clean, crisp nose of delicate citrus" as well as the "lingering mineral note on the finish". You can read the full review here: SF Chronicle Review.
Check out The Spanish Table in Berkeley, Du Vin Fine Wines in Alameda, San Francisco Wine Trading Company in San Francisco, or Silver Lake Wines in Los Angeles to stock up on the wine for your personal wine cellar.
Mr. Luis Pato the winemaker is somewhat of a rebel in the Portuguese wine world and in my opinion one of top wine makers in Portugal today. His winery is located in the northern Portuguese region of Bairrada. He only works with native varietals and production is very limited, working with lower production affords ...
